Hardwood Maintenance

As recommended by the National Wood Flooring Association.

  • Use dirt trapping walk off mats at all exterior doors.
  • Strong sunlight can cause fading of wood and stain. To avoid uneven appearance move area rugs occasionally and drape or shade large windows.
  • Apply fabric-faced glides to the legs of your furniture.
  • Allow 8 Hrs before walking on newly finished floors.
  • Allow 2 weeks before using cleaning products or placing rugs on newly
    finished floors.
  • Maintain adequate and consistent humidity level in home. (30%-50%)
  • Do not use water on newly finished surface for 1 month.
  • Wait 24 Hrs before installing furniture on newly finished floors.

Supplies Needed:

Dust Mop, Solsan dust mop treatment, Bridgepoint Wood Cleaner, Bridgepoint
Applicator Mop, 2 Bridgepoint Applicator pads & 2 Spray bottle's.

Cleaning Frequency: Weekly/Biweekly

  1. Vacuum or Dust Mop w/ Solsan.
  2. Mix a solution of 1 part wood cleaner to 8 parts water in a sprayer and
spray a light coat of the solution on the floor.
  3. Agitate Solution with Applicator and Pad to loosen soil.
  4. Change applicator pads and mop the floor with a clean fitted pad to
    remove residue and additional soil.

Suggested Professional Maintenance Schedule:

  1. Have floors professionally cleaned & polished 1-2 times per year.
  2. Have floors professionally Re-furbished every 1-2 years to prevent
    premature wear.

These scheduled maintenance services will prevent expensive Re-finishing
services from being performed as often.

  • Have floors professionally Sanded & Re-Finished once every 5-10 years.

Caring for your floors later:

According to Oak Flooring Institute, "a good rule of thumb is to vacuum or
dust weekly." After vacuuming or dusting, use recommended flooring cleaner
for spills and general cleanup on floors which have non-waxed polyurethane
or Swedish finish.

Additionally:

  1. Place mats and throw rugs at doorways, exteriors and interiors to help
prevent the tracking of grit, dirt and sand.
  2. Never wet-mop a wood floor. Water and wood do not mix well together.
    Use recommended flooring cleaner.
  3. Wipe up food and other spills immediately with a dry or slightly
    dampened towel (wipe dry).
  4. Keep high heels in good repairs. An unprotected tip will dent any
    hardwood floor.
  5. Using a humidifier or dehumidifier in conjunction with a furnace or
air conditioning system to maintain relative humidity in the home at 30-50%
will maintain the moisture in the wood and minimize cracks between the
    boards
  6. Put plastic or fabric-faced glides under the legs of furniture to
    prevent scuffing and scratching.
  7. Kitchen floors experience the most traffic in a home. Place an area
rug in front of the kitchen sink and stove. Shake out or vacuum the rugs
    frequently.
  8. When moving heavy furniture, protect wood flooring by slipping a piece
of cloth or blanket under the legs.
  9. Do not use wax, oil soap, or other household cleaners.
  10. Finally, urethane finishes eventually will show wear patterns from
surface scratching. When high traffic areas begin to look dull it is time to
recoat or restore the finish. Call L.Trevino Carpet & Tile Co. at (773)736-6028 for a free evaluation of the condition of your floor.
